Complete Guide to Hub Maintenance

Hubs are the heart of your wheels, and proper maintenance keeps them spinning smoothly for years. Whether you have sealed cartridge bearings or traditional cup-and-cone systems, understanding hub maintenance extends the life of your wheels and improves ride quality.

Types of Hub Bearing Systems

Cup-and-Cone Bearings:

Cartridge Bearings:

  • Sealed units containing balls, races, and retainers

Signs Your Hubs Need Attention

Cup-and-Cone Hub Service

Tools Required:

  • Cone wrenches (typically 13mm, 15mm, or 17mm)
  • Open-end wrenches for locknuts
  • Quality grease
  • Solvent for cleaning
  • Replacement bearings (optional)

Disassembly Process:

  1. Remove wheel from bike and remove quick-release or thru-axle
  2. Hold the cone with a cone wrench while loosening the locknut
  3. Remove locknut, any washers, and the cone from one side
  4. Carefully pull the axle out from the opposite side
  5. Catch the ball bearings as they fall out—count them
  6. Remove bearings from both sides, noting the number in each cup

Cleaning and Inspection:

  1. Clean all bearings in solvent, let dry completely
  2. Wipe cups and cones with solvent-soaked rag
  3. Inspect cups and cones for pitting, scoring, or wear
  4. Replace any damaged components or worn bearings
  5. Check axle for bends by rolling on flat surface

Reassembly and Adjustment:

  1. Pack fresh grease into both bearing cups
  2. Press bearings into grease—they should stick in place
  3. Insert axle from one side, being careful not to dislodge bearings
  4. Add bearings to the second side
  5. Thread cone onto axle until snug against bearings
  6. Adjust cone: tighten until slight resistance, then back off 1/4 turn
  7. Install washers and locknut, holding cone in place
  8. Check adjustment—minimal play, smooth rotation

Cartridge Bearing Hub Service

Tools Required:

  • Bearing press or drift punches
  • Mallet
  • Replacement bearings (sized for your hub)
  • Seal pick (for removing dust covers)

Bearing Replacement:

  1. Remove end caps and axle
  2. Note bearing orientation and any spacers
  3. Use appropriate drift to punch out old bearings
  4. Clean bearing seats in hub shell
  5. Press new bearings in squarely using proper tools
  6. Reinstall spacers, axle, and end caps

Freehub Body Maintenance

The freehub deserves special attention:

  1. Remove freehub body (usually 10mm hex or Shimano tool)
  2. Clean pawls and ratchet mechanism
  3. Apply light oil to pawls—not grease, which slows engagement
  4. Inspect for worn or broken pawls
  5. Clean splines and apply thin grease layer
